10 best and worst Atari 2600 games

March 1st, 2010 · No Comments

This top ten list based on my opinion these are the ones to have and the ones to avoid. I base these on graphics, ease of play, how addicting the game may be and how much thought was put into to game itself. While I did not play every single game in the atari line I did play many. I welcome your oppinion as well as suggestions for games that should be on the list.

Vintage must have games and some not to have (in my opinion).

Top ten Best

10. Pac man - Just a classic and even though the game resembles the arcade version only a little. The premise was there and the ever increasingly hard levels kept the game me coming back for more.

9. Pitfall - I would spend hours trying to get all the treasure. The vintage game is much more fun than its modern counterparts.

8. Atlantis - While not an overly complex game, the games ever increasing speed would test the nerves. Kind of like Missile Command, only better.

7. Demon Attack- An ever changing arsenal of aliens that keep increasing in speed makes this one of the best.

6. Keystone Kapers - Activision 1983- Mad cap action in a department store- who could ask for anything more.

5. Joust - Great game for one or two players and the one of the few with giant flying ostriches

4. Raiders of the Lost Ark - It made me think and I believe that it is the first video game with an EASTER EGG. Took forever to figure it out.

3. Kaboom - Activision 1981- Non-stop action and at the time, If you completed all levels you would get a free tee shirt patch from the bucket brigade.

2. Berserk - Atari 1982 - Electrified robots shooting, electrified walls and the big bouncing face. Very close to the arcade version.

1. Mario Bros. - Atari 1983 the game that spawned a whole new generation of video games and the Nintendo System.

Top 10 honorable mentions Dig Dug, Centipede, Asteroids

10 worst Atari games.

10. Any 4 of the Sword Quest games. Running around dropping objects and moving objects from one room to another in hopes of finding a clue is just stupid; the mini games left much to be desired.

9. Night Driver Atari 1978 - while great technology in 1978 - it hasn’t stood the test of time.

8. Adventure - any game the can be defeated in less than five minutes should be on this list.

7. Haunted House - same premise as Adventure only different setting

6. Casino Atari 1978 - Just because the other person had to close there eyes as to not see your hand on the screen.

5. Atari football 1978 - Were those football players or space invader creatures.

4. Slot Racer - Just based on graphics and the range of motion.

3. Cosmic Ark Imagic 1982 - While good graphic for its time - Just bugged me terribly

2. ET - 100000 copies buried in the desert can’t be wrong

1. Mountain King - Nearly impossible to finish. Still have that stupid song in my head.

Honorable mention worst Hangman, Outlaw, Othello
